2001 Camry Air Filter

I just purchased a new air filter for my 2001 Camry LE 4 cyl. When I opened the air filter box, I found a pile of yellow insulation that looked like a mouse had made a nest in the box. It was under the air filter.

I talked to one of my friends that has the same car and he said that when he looked in his air filter box, he had the same pile of yellow insulation.

Does anyone know what the purpose of this material in the air filter box is for? Should I remove it or should I leave it there?

Thanks.

We figured out that a mouse was the culprit. The mouse (mice) had taken insulation from the wall in our garage and built nests in our air boxes.

I asked a friend who had a 95 camry if I could look in her air box and I discovered a mouse had built a nest in her vehicle also! Her air box nest contained a mixture of grass and some kind of black fabric.
