2004 Camry SE fog lights

The "fog lights" on the 2004 Camry SE are pieces of fluff. I have always thought that the problem with driving in fog, mist or snow at night was that the main beams reflected off the precipitation, causing loss of vision. It is apparent therefore, that if you could turn off the main beams and use the fog lights that are set lower on the car body, it would enable the driver to see over them as there would be far less reflection.

It appears that you cannot turn off the main beams and use the fogs only, so my question... can something be done with this setup.

Is there a way to use the fogs without having the main beams on and would it be legal in N. America?

For fog yellow bulbs are better, most " Fog" lights are really auxilary lamps. Fog is something to be avoided as often nothing helps. More light just makes visibility worse. Piaa makes good replacement yellow bulbs. In Europe many cars have only yellow front beams.

I am considering a new Camry XLE 4 cyl auto and wish to install fog lamps by Cibie. From what I've read, selective yellow (SY) is the best color and round is the best shape. I bought some Cibie Tangos SY from Daniel Stern Lighting for my 92 Land Cruiser and was very pleased. Are the locations for the foglamps on 04 Camry bumpers on all trim levels? Aren't they rectangular?

Look into Piaa they re known for the best wiring harness and have great products , lamps and replacment bulbs. Ive bought 3 sets so far and am happier than with Hella or Cibie ive had .

That may be as well, but the fact remains that if you cannot turn off the main reflective beams, then the fogs are useless regardless of their colour or intensity. This is the point I wish to make.

I own a 99 Camry and I can use the fog lights with the main beams switched off, in fact in the Netherlands this is mandatory. So perhaps it just requires some rewiring.

I believe that fog lamps with proper reflector design with an upper cutoff can be adjusted to shine a major part of their light at a low level. I aim mine at 36 inches from 30 feet and the Cibie's have good cutoffs.

Aaaah! Exactly my point. Now that I know it's possible, how can I get this done I wonder?
