2007 Camry XLE I4 Mileage Issues

Hi all:

I've got the above-mentioned car and love it with the exception of it's fuel economy at local driving. On the highway, at reasonable speeds (60-70 mph), the car has been getting anywhere from 32-34 MPG. Overall though, with a reasonable amount of highway miles (maybe 30-40%), I have been getting around 24-25 MPG (and lately just around 23). This implies that the local driving is getting significantly lower mileage than it should. Even the folks at the dealership said the car should be doing overall high-twenties.

I know it is not my driving habits as I don't drive any differently than I have with any of the cars I've owned and I have always gotten at or above the rated gas mileage. I anticipate stops, accelerate smoothly and gradually and my local driving is not stop and go city driving - it is what I'd call typical suburbia driving.

I also sometimes feel what I'd call gurgling when driving, as if the car was running too rich. Perhaps the car's sensors think that the car is not up to temperature and is still running rich as it would when cold? The dealer says that if this were the case, that the "Service Engine Light" would come on. However, we see nothing unusual being reported.

The car is approaching 6000 miles and the car is going into the shop on Monday.

Is there anything you experts might suggest that I should in turn suggest that the dealer look at?

Thanks in advance to all.

Yes, I know that. Thanks for responding though. The mileage has been low since I got the car in September and has only dropped another MPG or so since then, so I still think something is wrong.

Are your tires properly inflated? Also, when your car is broken in, you may want to switch to good quality synthetic oil in engine & tranny. It makes a difference.

23-25 mpg mixed city/ hwy. and 32-34 mpg highway sounds right to me. What were you expecting? AFAIK, you need to go to the hybrid to improve on those numbers. The highway mileage indicates the state of efficiency. If you're getting 32 or more, you're fine. City driving is always going to be less due to running in lower gears and accelerating and braking more often, plus factoring in loss of mileage from idling and cold start.

I'm not doing any "city" driving at all. It is rural/suburban driving. Toyota rates the car as getting 24 mpg city, so I'd figure that a mix of rural/suburban (start the car, drive mostly without stops at 30-50 mph and then onto the highway, and highway driving for 15-20 miles) should get mid to upper 20s. (That's in fact what the dealer said most folks are getting.)

Since the car is rated at 24MPG city, I'd expect that my mix of driving (with a significant amount of highway driving added in,) should do better than the 24.

Anyway, they'll check it out and see if my diagnosis is correct later this week.

Thanks for the interest though.

Looks like some other people are having the same problem. Who knows, may be the transmission. There is a new TSB out a couple of weeks ago, that if your transmission is one of the defective ones and goes into neutral while accelerating, you'll get a new tranny free.

Question 07 camry 4Cyl Transmission issues ?

The 07 camry 4cyl in not very responsive, it appears the default tuning is faulty, it does not either saves gas with poor response. In fact my city mileage is less 20 mpg, while the high miles are about

31mpg. The major flaw of the transmission is it jumps to higher gear (4) even at slightly lower down hill. Anyone know how to access the onboard computer of the camry where the transmission can be tuned.

I have 07 camry ce auto. I've been having some problems like lame accalaration (from stop) and wierd shifting and hesitation(happanes some times). I saw that a lot of people having the same issue with this on yahoo autos reviews. Andhopping toyota will fix this soon.

Our '95 Camrys get 27-31 mpg in similar mixed driving. He's right to be concerned about those numbers. One thing that really affects city numbers, though, is how hard you accelerate; since you are doing it a lot, the extra fuel used to accelerate quickly really adds up in *any* kind of stop and go driving.

I totally agree. Those figures are good. especially in light of the extra weight more modern Camry's have.

========= "On board diagnostics" aka "OBD" are fairly sensitive and comprehensive these days to detect faults in electronic control systems. Bear in mind, when considering fuel economy, that compared to the cost of a new car, finanace charges, if any, maintenance costs and insurance, fuel costs are less than one twentieth total expsnse and a variance of a couple mpg one way or the other even less. For example at 12,000 miles per year, total first year cost of $30,000 all inclusive, 2 mpg variance is rougly four thousandths of the total expense. Moral of the story, -- get your money's worth, drive the car, enjoy your new purchase, feel free to keep pace with traffic, without excessive concern about fuel mileage. Unless there were a functional deficiency (picked up by the "check engine" light), you're going to get decent mileage with a new car - especially the four cylinder model, containing variable valve timing, senstive computerized engine management and however many speeds in the transmission with overdrive and a lock up torque converter. Dont' worry. Be happy.

So you started having more of this problem after the dealer changed your oil @ 5000 miles? Or this is your first oil change at 6000 miles, its advised to change oil every 5,000 miles for best fuel consumption. The Owners manual (I4) recommends 0W-20 for better fuel economy and cold weather startups, do you know whats inside your engine? I don't exactly understand what you mean by gurgling, is it a rough idle? you can try using a different fuel as mentioned earlier that fuel blends are affected during winter.

Toyota doesn't rate the car, the EPA does. And the test has very specific conditions that are no longer realistic (f they ever were). It is very common for driver to get much poorer mileage than the EPA test results.

What did you expect the dealer to say? For the 2007 4 cylinder Camry, Consumer Report's overall mileage was 24 mpg. They only got 16 mpg in the city, and 36 mpg on the highway. Their 150 mile trip average was 29 mpg. Seems to me like you are beating the CR test by a large amount. I'd suggest that they are more honest than your dealer. Even with Hybrid Camry, Consumer Reports only got 28 mpg in their city loop and 37 on their 150 mile trip. In the CR consumer opinions section, there were several complaints about fuel economy - a couple specifically mentioned poor city fuel economy for the 4 cylinder (to be sure there were plenty of people mentioning great fuel economy).
