My 4 cyl engine with 279,000kms seems to loose power on slight inclines at highway speeds. Replaced fuel filter and it is some what better.
Any ideas?

How is the compression? Have you changed oil lately? spark plugs? air filter? Check the engine timing.
There are a lot of things that might cause that, and from my point of = view 4 Cyl engines do not last very long.
Any ideas?

279k km (173K miles) is a fair number of miles. So long as the compression is up within spec and there is not a LOT of blowby exiting the crankcase when you remove the PCV valve (assuming it has one), then check your normal tune-up items. Other things that will affect power are a clogged catalyst, a lazy O2 sensor, a loose cam belt, etc.-- - Philip @ Maximum Torque RPM
