'86 Camry stumble/hesitation, help?

'86 Camry, manual, 233K

I'm having a problem when coming off of idle/letting out the clutch to take off where the engine stumbles very badly. If I don't depress the clutch several times and give it gas while getting the car up to speed, the engine may die. The stumbling causes front end to shake pretty badly until the car is crusing.

The engine doesn't noticeably hesitate or miss once up to speed. In fact, the car drives and accelerates best when on the freeway. The engine will rev without missing or doing anything unusual at a standstill. Also doesn't matter whether it is cold or hot (ambient or engine), though it is much worse when cold.

My brother and I recently checked the timing, pulled the plugs, cap, and wires, all seem acceptable. Cap, rotor, and wires are pretty new. Fuel filter was also replaced with timing belt about 25K ago. We even cleaned the coil of carbon deposits as I have heard this can be a problem with the IIA.

The problem has been getting slowly but progressively worse, perhaps really bad the last 1K or so.

I'm going to have access to my friend's workshop in about a week. Any hints as to where I should look first with this problem?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

When I had this problem it turned out there was a slit I didn't see in the bottom of the air tube, running from the air filter to the intake plenum. The extra air flow doesn't get measure by the MAF sensor and causes problems. Of, it could be the MAF itself is gonzo and needs replacing ($135-165, either aftermarket or from Toyota).

Also, take a look around for a loose/plugged/missing vacuum line...

Hey HachiRoku,

This was *exactly* the problem (cracks in the intake "snorkel" after the MAF and before the throttle body.) Nobody saw 'em on a casual inspection and the whole assembly looked mint. Luckily, I have a mechanic friend with some spare time who took it to his shop and ran the "smoke test" on the intake -- and sure enough, smoke was pouring out. He put in a good used part to replace the old one and it works like it once did for a pretty good price. Thanks for the great advice!

Now, can anybody tell me what the approximate parts and labor would be on replacing the worn control arms on this rig? (86 Camry)

Thanks!
