91 4 cyl camry just starting to act up

the other morning about 40 degrees it spun like no ignition, took out the plugs clean and check gap, it fired up, today it had a stumble pulling a hill, then cleared up, the auto parts store told me he cant check for any codes because the check engine lite wasnt on, he said their is a way to get a signal using the key, has anyone heard of this procedure, thanks BOB

Find a shop manual at the library or aftermarket part store, or dealer. You'll probably "jump" two contacts in the data link connector (a pod that is part of the electrical harness under the hood, with a hinged cover). Usually a paper clip will work - just bend it in a "U" shape to make the connection. Then you turn on the key and count the pattern of flashing lights at the check engine symbol on the dash. The auto parts store is probably more familiar with the newer OBD II systems, that came in later. Just check something like the Haynes manual for the specific connection to make for your model.
