91 Camry Fuel Problems

I had a post a while back explaining my fuel problem, the problem was the car would either idle really low, or it would clime then drop until i shut the car off.

I replaced the injectors and the fuel filter after reading some of the posts and talking to some people here in town.

Now after that work (which was a pain the ass) the car will start but idle at 500 rpm, it sounds like it missing. I am at the point of just driving this damn thing off of a bridge..

Does anyone have any input that could be useful?

Thanks alot, Graem

Just some thoughts. Air, spark, and fuel are three vertices of the triangle that makes an engine run. But you don't want to be just replacing parts as it can get costly without necessarily fixing the problem.

Fuel: Have you checked the fuel pressure and make sure it's within range? Autozone and other parts stores have free loaner tools, but getting a gauge with a connector for the Toyota fuel rail is something you'll have to ask. Fuel pump, pump relay, or gas cap/charcoal canister not letting air into the tank (creating a vacuum holding the fuel back) can all cause fuel pressure problems.

Spark: Is the ignition system, including igniter, coil, etc in working order? A lot of older Camrys seem to have problems with oil and moisture getting past the worn o-ring into the distributor and ruining the coil, causing stalls and low RPMs. Is the electrical system generating enough juice? Is the timing correct (not just with a timing light but cam/crank marks line up?)

Air: Camrys are notorious for plugged up and sluggish idle air control valves. But these can be effectively cleaned, although sometimes needed frequently. In your case, you have a thermo-vacuum valve that shuts cold air out of the engine when the engine is cold. You also have to check that the EGR system isn't letting exhaust gas back while your are in idle range.

Many others can throw in a few ideas.
