93 Camry Keys

Hi,

I just bought a car used, the keys that came with it looked very worn out, so I had a duplicate set made at lowes as a precaution. However the new keys only open the door and trunk but will not start the car...is this a security measure or was the key badly made?

Thanks,

S

I think they're just junk - my best one is so worn it drops out of the ignition. Don't know if I could get a copy which would work.

Go to a locksmith and have them look up the number for your car and make the original keys. They will work!

Right. The dealer should be able to get the original pattern from the VIN and make the key for you. If you copy and old key, it will be no better, often worse. When I had mine done, the profile didn't even look the same. Surprisingly, the keys wear quite a bit over time.

Any idea of what the cost would be?

I had four keys made and also asked for the number, I think it cost me $20.00. Since they charge a fee for looking up the number, I will not have to pay for that the next time I need keys made.

On a Toyota, you can NOT get a key made fron the VIN (except perhaps at the original dealer that sold the car if he has the key number on file). Even using the 5 digit key number which is on the door hand (think its the passengers side but might be other - have to remove inside door panel to see it) it will probably still not work since the tumblers are worn from original. You could have the tumblers repaired but probably cheaper to buy new ones if you can install yourself.

That sounds more like the story I would expect from our local dealer - they try to pretend 1991 never existed, only have parts nobody ever needed. Subtle influence to make you give up and buy a new one... fat chance!

That must be fairly recent. Perhaps with the implementation of the electronic keys.

I was thinking of the non-electronic types, that a lock smith can duplicate. I know for my '87 Camry, neither Toyota nor the dealer had the key code. But it was inside the front passenger's door.
