98 V6 Automatic Transmission

Going through some of the old posts in this forum I noticed that most people say that, there isn't a differential filler/drain plug for the V6 automatic transmissions. When I was changing transmission oil yesterday I noticed that there is indeed a differential filler/drain plug just as the Haynes manual states. What is the real deal here? If I drain the differential can I fill it up from the transmission dip stick?

Thanks for your time.

My 94 Camry V6 auto does have separate drain and refill plugs for the differential and it holds about .9 quarts. I always drain and refill it when I change the fluid. However, I don't think it's totally isolated from the main tranny fluid supply. When I replaced the cv joint boots a few years ago, I pulled the drain plug for the differential only and let it drain overnight. The next day it had drained over 2 quarts of fluid, so I suppose if someone forgot to refill the diff, some would drain over from the main supply. I don't know how long that would take though.

Jim: You are correct. While there is a seal involved, that seal between the secondary shaft and the final drive is not intended to be perfect. As some may have noticed, the fluid level in automatic transmissions varies quite a bit when running vs. an after an hour sitting with the engine OFF.
