The check engine light comes on and stays on for a few days then goes off. Would the code or codes stay stored in the system till cleared

For codes that require more than one trip to trigger, the codes will stay there for a while. Otherwise, if there are no problems after a trip and the required diagnostics tests were made, one-trip codes are cleared and the MIL light is turned off.
Go to Autozone. They have free loaner OBD-II readers that will help you pull the code and clear the MIL light.
Let us know what the codes were.

My similar problems stopped when I stopped putting in more fuel after the first "auto" shut off at the pumps.
