A/C is only cold in 2 of 4 vents ('97 Camry)

All-

I have a 1997 Camry, V-6, auto and the A/C is only blowing cold on the driver's side 2 left vents. The 2 right vents on the passanger side simply come out at room temperature...no cooling on that side. The compressor is coming on and the air that comes out of the driver's side is ice cold...but the air on the passanger side comes out at what ever temperature the interier of the car is at. This isn't a new problem, as it has existed for a couple years with it not getting worse or better...only recently are we hauling people in the back seat that I realize the importance of getting this fixed!

If if switch it to heat, both sides will blow warm, so the issue is only with A/C. I've also switched the lever which controls where the air will be pulled from (inside or outside of the cabin), but still the same problem.

The guy at Pep Boys suggested it was a blender switch problem. Have any of you guys had a similar problem or worked on the blender switch?

Thanks!!

Dave

I assume you mean the vents in the instrument panel. How about the floor vents? Is there cold air coming out of the floor vents when you switch from the one horizontal arrow on the switch to the two arrows, one horizontal and one pointing down?

Yes, I was referring to the vents on the dash.

Good question about the floor vents. I tried the floor vents and they are not blowing cool air either. Seems like the air just is not cooling on the passenger side.

Any other ideas or suggestions??

Thanks!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm no expert (believe me!) but it sounds like there's a "shutter" or rudderlike device inside the chamber which directs air from the a/c to the vents, which isn't working. Since the switch on your instrument panel is strictly electric, it would follow that the other end of the line connects with an electric relay that shunts the shutter one way or the other, and it's not working. Sounds like the Pep boys guys are onto something with their talk of a 'blender switch'. You'll have to trace the airflow back to a chamber (the 'plenum' chamber maybe ?) to see the shutter or rudder and why it's not operating. You'll likely need a manual with illustrations of the a/c system for your car. Good luck!
