Aftermarket filter, FINALLY, for 02-03's

Wandered down to the parts store and found that purolator finally has come out with an aftermarket airfilter for the '02-03s.

Goodbye, $32 Toyota filter. Hello, $5.98 Purolator....

=============== You're referring to the cabin air filter rather than the engine air filter.

Actually, I'm referring to the air filter. The cabin filter I'm still getting from NAPA at $19, but that beats Toyota's price at $34 and change....and Bosch at $24.99.

Purolator supposedly makes a cabin filter for the car, but my local discount house doesn't stock cabin filters and won't order them.

============== Things have changed. I paid under $12 for the Toyota air filter and it was vastly superior to the aftermarket air filter I had seen. In 30,000 miles at 25 mpg, you're running roughly 18,000 gallons of air through the engine. I've always felt the Toyota air filter does an excellent job of maximizing both flow and filtration efficiency. I don't have any idea why they run over $30 for your model.

May be my somewhat rural location and only one Toy dealer for some 30 miles or more....I change out my air filters about every 7 to 10K, lots of rural roads and especially this time of year, lots of dust. I'm assuming that Purolator, NAPA (which are rebranded WIX) are all pretty comparable unless you are talking about price. I actually even think that Fram air filters are probably OK despite what you hear about their oil filters.

But, considering that I insist on oil changes every 3K, even the Frams are doable....

The local dealer here (Lithia) has a price of $16.95 for ALL Toyota air filters and 26.95 for all cabin filters. I was getting them on-line 2 of each delivered for about $54 in no Calif.. Were Denso filters but can't get them this year for some reason.

I used a coupon from my Toyota dealer recently to buy a Toyota air filter for $12.95. You can also check the dealer websites for part specials.

NAPA (Wix) or the Purolator filters are multi-density like the OEM ones. These may be better than the single density paper on Frams.

You may be right. Long ago, I lived in a place with a lot of fine sand and a lot of wind. Have trouble with sand in the carb quite a bit, and I was using fram air filters at the time. My mechanic suggested switching back to the original Toyota and never had another problem.
