Another question, 89 Mazda 626 clutch pedal

I have been using this for a motor paper delivery route for about a week now. But today something happened and I'm glad I got home...

The clutch pedal 'resting' position is now about 1/2" higher than it was. When you take your foot off the pedal, the brake and clutch pedals were even, but last night it changed and now the clutch is about 1'2" higher than the brake. Everything else is the same; there is the same amount of pressure pressing it to the floor, the clutch engages and disengages at the same point as before, it just ends up higher than before.

It kind of threw me for the first 15-20 mins after it happened.

I am again posting this to the Toy groups as I had the same thing happen to an '83 Tercel, and maybe someone has a quick answer. There are talented people in all these groups, and I am discovering the 626 isn't really all that far from a Camry.

I should also mention, I drove home, parked the car, and am typing this message without having a look...just wondering if someone has run across this before.

Check above the pedal to see if there is an adjustable stop - maybe the locknut got lost or moved.

Is the clutch pedal higher or is the brake pedal lower for some reason?

The peddle stop cushion /pad probably broke due to age and fell off.

If you look around on the floorboard and find something looking like that you will know for sure.

That is exactly what has happened. The clutch pedal has a *stop* which stops it swinging up under return-spring pulling. Get down there and have a look.

The clutch pedal definitely went higher. I felt it go further than normal when I went to take my foot off it.

I can "ride the clutch". Since the engagement didn't move, I'm not actually riding it, it just stops higher than it did before.

I think I'll go with Danny G's idea to look on the floor before I twist myself around like a Philly Pretzel to look up under the dash!!! ;)

OK, I believe you. From the original description, either the clutch could have been the higher or the brake lower.

Unfortunately, when the sun was shining earlier this AM, I took the top off the Supra and went for a ride. Got back just in time to put the roof back before it started raining.

I'll get out there and have a look when it dries up...

Actually, what it was was a large 'stopper' that depresses a switch!

I can understand why you would have a switch at the *bottom* of the clutch travel, for the starter interlock, but why is there one at the *top*?!

See my answer to Jason; it was used to depress a switch.

And you were right, it was on the floor in four pieces.

I knew I wasn't going to find one at any parts stores, so I went to the hardware store with the nub that holds it in, found a panel retainer the same diameter, and a screw cap that fit on that, RTVed them together and put it in the hole.

Runs New!

I couldn't find the hole at first, so I wound up doing the Pretzel thing, removed the dash, and then found the hole 1/2 way up the pedal...

Oh, well, I had to reseat the dashboard anyway...

I would guess that was a cruise control safety switch.

If it is, then the idiot that installed it had his head...er, somewhere else...

It has CC, but it looks aftermarket to me. I bet that is just what this is for, but the problem is, when you depress the clutch with the CC on , the engine races until you hit the bottom of the travel!!! So, if you have the CC on and depress the clutch, do it AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!

Yup, I'll bet that's what it is. Wish I'd seen your post before I buttoned the dash back up! ;)
