Are Camry gas caps proprietary, or can I use anyone that fits?

I've been getting the same old Check Engine light for fuel evaporation for 2 weeks now, and I'm thinking about replacing the gas cap. But will any cap that fits work, or is the Toyota model proprietary in some sneaky way?

Thanks,

Norm

Norm have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery terminals after a few minutes interval? That cleared the same problem for me one time. Was on same car as yours- a 99 XLE Mike

That happened to have worked for me, but the light did soon come back on. I expect to replace my gas cap before I would bring my car in for a checkup.

Exactly. Could probably replace the cap several times for the price of one checkup.

Anyway a friend reset the computer with his OBDII and there were no other pending codes. So far so good, I'll listenen to hear a sucking sound next time I fill up. I believe the code he saw was P0146, IIRC.

This is the third time the gas cap has done this in 6 months, and believe me I tighten it well. I think the rubber seal on the cap may not be holding pressure in/out, as the case may be.

Thanks
