Auto Trasmission ?

I asked this question about a month ago but never got much in the way of replies other than check engine mountings.Which seem fine.

I have had my 1995 2.2 Auto CAMRY from new. It has 75.000 miles on it now. Never been abused. Always been serviced in time. Auto gear box has had 4 Fluid changes during that time all by TOYOTA main dealer.

For as long as I can remember when I was selecting either D or R from N. There was a "kick "as if some thing was engaging. But of late that has got less. Now the "Kick" on D/R selection is just perceptible.

It drives like it always has I don't notice any slip or odd things. I go up a fairly steep hill once a weeks and all seems fine.

However I am somewhat concerned about the absence of this "kick" missing. I am in fact a little nervous now of long journeys because of the change. Gear changes are as always have been. I have never ever wondered about its reliability in the 10 years I have had it.

Is something wear out ? or wearing in , getting smoother ? Do I have a problem ?

My son has a Mitzi Corisma there is just a perceptible "Kick" on that one. My son says it has never been any thing else.

Am I concerned unnecessarily ?

You SHOULD have been more concerned about the 'kick'! I have never had a Toyota A/T do that unless it was in tough shape!

Check the ATF fluid level. Shifting from N into D or R should give a kick within about 1 second (can't reacall the exact spec).

If I were you I'll also drop the pan, clean it, replace the gasket AND the strainer. Don't try to clean the strainer. It may be restricting fluid flow and lowering the ATF line pressure.

Also check the transmission linkage and make sure it is properly adjusted. Your Haynes manual comes in handy here.

Check the ATF fluid level. ~~~ Agree. Best place to begin. Drive min. 10 miles to fully warm first, shift through gears, then check dip stick with engine idling.

drop the pan, clean it, replace the gasket AND the strainer. Don't try to clean the strainer. It may be restricting fluid flow and lowering the ATF line pressure. ~~~~~ Don't agree with any of that. (sorry) If the fuild has been changed four times in 75,000 miles, (once every

18, 750) there should be no problem with the strainer. I would not recommend changing the gakset unless there is seepage or leaking. Gnereal recommendation is to change the fluid every 30,000 miles, so if he has been changing roughly every 20,000 miles, fluid should be good. Keeping the fluid clean is a very good idea.

check the transmission linkage and make sure it is properly adjusted ~~~~~~ If he is noticing slight differences in shift behaviour, would probably notice changes in shift linkage behaviour having owned the car since new. If the mark (next to the shift position) is aligned with the gear position indicator on the console, and the transmission gear selector physically moves without restriction into the detents for each gear, adjustment should not be required at 75,000 miles.

Back to #1. Check the fluid level first.

The ECM (computer) alters engine speed during shifting. If the fluid is clean (red or pink, not brown) and the level is correct, no further action should be required. If the fluid had been neglected - for example not changed regularly, then I would agree with the points mentioned above, except the strainer should be able to be cleaned.

Hi Daniel, Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I don't notice any other change other than the " missing kick " from N to D or R. The rest seems to be as it always has for the last 10 years I have had it. Gear change seems free, no binding ( I am retired engineer ) I just checked the fluid after about 20 miles. It does look a little high. But the missing kick is any time. Straight cold from garage after overnight. Or after miles use.

Bit of a mystery. Wonder if its worth a fluid change again. But I doubt it.

As I say my sons Mitzi has never had any kick to notice.

Thanks for the rest of the replies. Its a nice group.

THANKS TO ALL.

Johnny UK.
