brake fluid line flushing caps

When I flushed the brake fluid in my wife's '99 camry, I noticed there were rubber caps / stoppers covering the bleed valves.

These rubber caps are missing on my '96 camry. Probably the mechanics lost them, when I paid them to flush my fluid.

Where can I get replacement caps? About how much do they cost? Kragen doesn't seem to carry them.

Thanks,

Michael

Buy some vacuum line caps/plugs/stoppers at any auto parts store. They're probably cheaper and easier to find. All you're trying to do is keep dust/dirt out of the bleed valve.

Vacuum line plugs should work. They help keep dirt from getting into the bleeders. However, many cars actually don't have them to begin with.

I'vd checked local stores and NAPAs but they have only empty drawers with the picture on there. After a few years the rubber developed cracks and needed replacing. But I still use them because I can't find new ones locally either.

I think there were around $0.50 - $1 a piece or around there. Can't remember for sure.

===== Toyota dealers can obtain these, they don't cost much. But even the new ones included with my remanufactured Toyota calipers develop cracks fairly easily. Seems like of the two front calipers, one had those rubber caps made of some type of newer synthetic material similar to the new axle grease boots. Seemed like the old axle boots could benefit from the application of silcone grease. It was absorbed and seemed to soften and extend useful life, but on the new boots, I removed the silicone grease because it just remained on the surface attracting grit. This new material is more temperature resistant and supposed to last longer. Best bet, just buy extra dust caps. They not only shield dust but general road grime and grit - things you don't want entering your brake hydraulic system even though fluid should only be exiting the bleeder screws.
