Camry BRAKE indicator on in Dashboard.

I have a 2000 Camry CE. Its 'BRAKE' indicators are coming up in the dashboard. There is no issue in the brakes as I feel or, when I use it. Also, it does not stay 'on' all the time. it comes off and on every two or three minutes.

(a) Can it be possible that the brake fluid has gone down? I checked it and it seems OK. (b) May be the hand break wires broke down. Hand break is completely released though. (c) Can the indicator come up due to break pads or shims gone bad, but then should not I feel it while breaking. But, there is an increase in the engine noise (not sure if that's because snow!!), and it slows down faster when I put it in neutral.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The most likely explanation is that the brake fluid is slightly low, and when it sloshes around in the reservoir it actuates the warning light. Try adding a bit of the appropriate brake fluid from a sealed container.

Usual cause is low fluid. Be aware that as the brake pads wear and the backing plates move closer to the rotor, this creates a larger volume in the brake calipers so low brake fluid often means worn brake pads. Minimum thickness is 1 mm. You need to remove the wheel to check the brake pad thickness, although if you have alloy wheels and the openings align just right you can probably see the outer brake pad thickness without removing the wheel. However, if the calipers - more likely sliding pins, are sticking at all, the wear on the inner pad can be more. Point is, you wouldn't necessarily notice any difference in braking effectiveness as the pads wear down but low fliuid is a sign to have them checked.

I second this. I had a similar situation with my '99 Camry, I added a tiny amount of Brake Fluid and the dash light hasn't come on since -- and that was a few months ago now.
