camry keyless

Dear Experts,

I believe I have asked this question before, but know I have to know for sure. I own a 2000 Camry LE 4 cyl. The car is loaded with features. Power sunroof, power drivers seat, factory alloy wheels, power heated mirrors, JBL sound system, etc.

However, I have wondered for the past two years why the car wasn`t equipped with keyless entry. About 1 month ago, I was in contact with my dealership and confirmed with them that the car does have the feature. They checked via VIN lookup.

Based on that, I bought a keyless remote off of Ebay for the car. I received the FOB today and tried to program it with no luck. The locks were supposed to cycle but failed to at the end of the instructions. I tried the instructions about 10 times. The instructions I received matched the ones on "programyourremote.com"

After all that, I called the dealership back and said that it may need to be tethered to a link program at the dealership to activate. Is this true. It will cost me $45.00 just to program it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

"The car" might have been available with the feature, but that does not necessarily mean that "your car" came with all the hardware integral to that system. Just a thought.

Our Avalon came keyless. Not all Avalons had that feature. There is no place for an ignition key.

As you approach the door with the fob on your person, the car will sense your presence and allow you to open the door.

I'm not saying I have the push button system with the approach feature. I am just simply curious why the car shouldn't have it. According to the brochure for that year, with all of the options found on the car, it should have been included. I don't even want to security system, but merely the keyless entry option by remote FOB. Thanks for the reply though!

******** I fully understand. Programming these remote fobs is sometimes a bit tricky.

In some Toyota cases, getting new keys can be a problem. Sister just went through this with her Highlander, when she lost a couple of ignition keys (well, entrusted them to her kids... Same as lost).

Dealership told her that she could only have 4 keys, I believe, cut for her system.. After that, it requires a different computer, blah, blah.. About $1 grand. I shopped it around various locksmiths who thought they had the expertise to do the job, but none managed. Fob was also involved.

Point is, if it gets too tough, you may have to go to a really high quality mechanic or a dealership.
