Car Alarm Misery on 96 Toyota Camry

The ironic thing about my old 96 Toyota Camry is that the vehicle has performed fine except for the car alarm. This thing has given me so much grief, and I wish there was a simple way to just deactivate the thing.

My main problem has been that the alarm will just go off at random, and my remote key only deactivates the alarm if I depress the button really hard.

Well today, the remote key button got stuck somehow and it armed my car when I was inside. I tried to start the car, and it refused to start. Thank God, the remote managed to work after several tries. However, I am now out of town, and I won't have access to a Toyota dealership until Saturday. I am scared of this damn remote button getting stuck again and setting off the alarm. However, if I leave the remote at home, I will be screwed as well if the alarm goes off.

Is there anything an owner can do to turn off the alarm without the remote?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wouldn't it be possible to simply pull a fuse to the alarm? I assume the alarm makes the horn blow, so you can't simply cut the wires to the horn, rendering it always inoperable, but I should think you could trace the wiring from the alarm to the horn, silencing the horn when the alarm activates, but still leaving the horn working......? Or if you're electrically inept, it should be a simple matter for an automotive electrical specialist to sort out, leaving the horn working but the alarm de-activated.

========================= I'd give this guy a call. He's been very helpful in providing programming instructions when I've purchased remotes - perhaps he can tell you how to program it into an "OFF" mode.

Is this the Toyota VIP alarm system? Or dealer's "aftermarket special"?

If the VIP, it's made by Fujitsu-Ten. There is a fax-back number posted, I think:

310 327-9905 is still correct (?). Factory alarm won't lock you in if the key is in the ignition.

Fujitsu-ten will fax you complete installation instruction and wiring information that may help. Reading it is fun even if you don't need to work on the alarm. (Besides, most of the wiring is already in place from the factory, so it's almost "plug and play".) But If your alarm is dealer's own aftermarket special, then it could be anything.
