Clutch Replacement for 2000 6-cylinder?

My 2000 manual transmission Camry has 117,000 miles and the clutch needs replacement soon. The dealer quoted ~$1000 due to labor (it is a

6-cylinder). Does that sound reasonable?

That sounds very expensive. I mean all they do is remove the manual trans axle which with experienced mechanics should be no more than 3hrs. Over here (Oz) hourly rate is about $70 maximum,..so with one guy doing 2 hrs on his own and a 2nd guy to help for an hour you still only get $280 to pull it out and $280 to re-install,..thats $560 total labor and thats on the high side IMO. The actual clutch kit includes: a pressure-plate, a clutch-plate and a new release bearing. Genuine Toyota may cost $440,..but you should get a good name kit for less than $250.

Ask around friends, neighbors, etc for a reputable mechanic shop who value their customers. People are usually willing to tell which ones they have found are good or not.

About $600 in my area, even at the dealer. A little more concerned that

117K seems a bit early. I've never replaced one and both my Toys have better than 220K on five-speed manuals -- One hydraulic system, the other isn't
