Did they kiss you too when they had sex with you on the trade in? Unless that Forester was in super rough shape you been had as I see it. It is a bit late to be asking price opinions now, however. Also you are buying a used car with 11,000 miles on it, a new car has no miles on it.

Thanks, I will double check with Edmunds. Are you thinking that the trade in value for my subau is bad or the price of the Camry?

Thanks, David

I tried 4 different dealers and the maximum offer for my subaru was $3,000 form the subaru dealer. I know it is only 4 yrs old but I can't see anyone giving much for a car with 170,000 miles on it.

I tried Edmunds to check on the price for the Camry but they do not have a listing for used 2004 models.

Perhaps I will check a different dealer tomorrow for a new one and see how it shakes out. I haven't heard of any rebates on new ones.

Thanks, David

If it is not too late I really would check with some other dealers on a new vehicle and see what you can get selling your Subaru privately. I somehow feel there is at least another two thousand dollars for you in the deal if you have patience and do some leg work.

Assume you could even sell your present vehicle for 2500 ---what discount can you get for a straight cash deal. nIf no rebates at least there is low rate financing on new vehicles.

Best of Luck Mike

I would add that if this is your first time buying a new car, take someone experienced with you and read every piece of paper before you sign it expecially if financing is involved. Most people get the worse rip off when they are in the finance office at the dealership.

OK you have a lot of miles on that Forrester so that explains the low price. Be sure to check newspaper adds in this weekend newspaper to make sure the new price you got is good. You might want to check Carmax to see if they will make you an offer on the Subaru to see how it compares. They buy used cars.

Then watch out in the financing office for price chances and finance rate changes if you are financing them. Don't sign anything you don't read and understand. Don't let them rush you. Let them laugh as you read everything. Tell them you are walking out if they don't let you concentrate.

I'll tell you a Subaru story. I had a great negotiated deal on a Legacy wagon years ago and was ready to sign and started feeling sick. Told them I had to leave and would sign the next day because I was sick. They asked if I would feel good enuf to sign for another $500 off. That was after thinking I had a excellent deal according to all the documentation on car pricing I could find. And yes it did make me feel good enuf to sign.

Thanks for the advice Mike. The problem with me selling my Subaru outright is that it is one of a long line of vehicles I have used in my small business and if I don't do a "like kind exchange" I am aftaid I will take a huge hit on my taxes. Plus just looking at one of the IRS recapture forms gives me the willies.

My only real problem with the deal is them not budging on their price for the Camry. I will check on some new ones tomorrow before I turn in the loan papers to the credit union.

Yes, when the dealer said he could have the loan done in less than an hour if I had good credit and I could take the car home that day, it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I told him I wanted to check with my credit union.

I did put down a deposit tho and I could kick myself for being that impulsive.

I once but a hundred dollar deposit on a used car to hold it for the weekend and then decided I did not want it as a friend looked it over and showed me a number of flaws I had not seen. Went back to the dealer and told him I was willing to forgo the deal and let them keep the deposit and the guy insisted in returning my money.

I have since referred other people to that dealership based on that yet never did buy a car from them.

Depending on the size of your deposit you may want to let it go or drag it out on the paper work until you are convinced you can do no better than that deal.

BTW where are you located??

Once Again Good Luck

Mike

I put $200 down. If I decide that they were being dishonest with me, I will surely not let them keep the deposit. I put the deposit on my credit card so if they try to keep it I can go to the credit card company to have them cancell the transaction.

Thanks again,

David

Most good dealers will return the deposit. I tested an '86 Corolla SR-5, decided I wanted it and put down $500. On the way home my wife and I were talking and decided we didn't want it. I don't remember why, it was a real nice (brand new) car, had everything. Called the dealer, they had already started prepping it, said, Sure, just come down and pick up your check! NP!

Glad I didn't buy it. Three months later I bought the GTS version I still have!

I did decide to go with a new Camry instead of the used one.I called the dealer and told them the deal was off and they said they would reverse the charge on my credit card for the depost which is what I thought would happen.

I got the new Camry in a color I like better for only a few hundred bucks more. I should be able to pickit up today.

Since I will go through the 36,000 mile warrenty in the first year, I was wondering what the folks in this NG think of the 100,000 mile warrenty for about $950.00.

I boiught the extra warrenty on my Subaru for over $1,400.00 and it came in handy when the head gasket had to be changed at 90,000 miles. But over all I still lost money on the deal. I just didn't have to come up with a $1,000.00 all at once when the repair was needed.

Thanks, David

This reminds me of the Supranos when Tony went over to Italy to make a deal with the mob over there to ship them some high quality used cars for them to sell.

I am not accusing I just think it is a funny parralell.

Powertain is covered longer is it not?

Bank the $950 and you will likley still have it in the bank at 100000! If you put it in a cashable paper, you will have some interest, and will think twice about spending it on other items.

Dont forget if you finance you also have to cover the extra finance charges on the 950-

Bottom line: good deal for the 'insurers' and dealer profit.

A good deal for Ford and Chrysler buyers but a bad deal for Toyota and Honda buyers.

Maybe not. My 2001 Avalon with only 20k miles on it is having intermittent problems with the VSC/ABS system. Warning lights suddenly go on and or off while driving down the highway. Intermittent issues like this can cost big bucks to fix. Right now I'm ignoring it.
