Driving Lights OFF!

Can someone tell me how to disable the driving lights on a 1999 Toyota Camry? They are great all year round until the Christmas season when we go to see the light displays. There is always a sign at the begaining of the tour that says please use parking lights only. That way it doesn't distract the people in the car infront of you. I have tried, but still can't figure out how to turn off the driving lights just when we need them to be off.

Thanks in advance

John

Thanks Philip.

Now if I could only find out where the DRL relay is located?

Philip,..do the US models not have a parking light position on the light/blinker-indicator stalk? If so, I'm amazed,...but then again we (Ozzys) were influenced by the British originally. The parking light switch is only used when its too light for headlights but too dark to not have any lights,..even then, a lot of drivers just switch straight to h/lights.

Yes the US models have parking selection on them, but it is kind of useless when the driving lights are always on. I don't know why they bother with the parking light selection since there are driving lights blaring out at all times. Actually though you can use the parking lights when the engine is off.

The most available information source is your dealership's parts department. They have on computer a component location screen which shows graphically the location of modules, switches, harnasses, etc, model by model..

There are variations on the theme. In the case of my '03 Corolla, the "smart stalk" controls the turnsignals and headlights (OFF/Parking/ON, also Hi/Lo beam). With this conventional switch, OFF is overridden by the DRL module which puts the Twilight Sentinel in charge of deciding if DRL or Headlights ON is appropriate.

In the case of '03+ Camry, there is an additional "smart stalk" switch position between OFF and Parking labeled AUTO (if I recall right). AUTO puts the Twilight Sentinel in charge of deciding if DRL or Headlights ON is appropriate, while OFF is manual OFF.

In America, it is illegal in every state that I know of (the qualifier) to drive with only your "parking" lights.

And so it should be. Aside from those who rant about overregulation it is proven that more lights equal more visibility to pedestrians and other motorists. Period.

This may or may not work on your car. It does on many. Just pull up the parking brake "one click." By that, I don't mean yank up the parking brake as far as it will go....just to the very first notch. On many cars that disables the light. Your will probably one of the ones that this does not work on. :(

I agree 100%. I just want to turn mine off during the tour of Christmas lights.

overregulation it is

Christmas

The above paragraph about overregulation is not of my authoring. Very sloppy editing on somebody's part. Lighting must remain at the discretion and prudence of the driver. Anything automatic about lighting (with the exception of automatic signal flashers) is debatable.

IT WOKED! MAN I WAS SO EXCITED WHEN I LIFTED THE E-BRAKE ONE CLICK AND IT TURNED THE DRIVING LIGHTS OFF. THEN YOU COULD USE THE SWITCH TO MANUALLY TURN THE HEAD LIGHTS OR PARK LIGHTS ON. YOU STILL HAVE THE BRAKE LIGHT WARNING ON THE DASH, BUT FOR TOURING THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS I CAN LIVE WITH THE BRAKE LIGHT ON THE DASH FOR A FEW MINUTES.

THANKS A MILLION TIM, YOUR THE MAN
