How Do I "Adjust" Rear Brakes - 01 Camry CE

I brought my 01 Camry CE to the dealer for the 36,000 mile oil change and inquired as to why the brakes feel weak (pedal needs more push than it used to). I was told that the rear brakes are way out of adjustment. I purchased the Haynes manual for this vehicle but I can't seem to find any info on this adjustment, just replacement. I have been told at 36,000 they won't need replacing so my question is what do I need to do? The dealer has confirmed that both front and rear brakes are fine, just that the rear need adjustment. I am off to the local automotive store to spend the $40 they want for this adjustment on a jack and some stands. I am hoping to do this repair this afternoon if someone would be kind enough to post the information I need.

Thanks so much.

Rear brakes are self adjusting if they are drums. Go to another " brake " shop for an opinion.

By backing up and applying the brakes the rear drum brakes self adjust. It could be you have air in your brake lines, this could cause a spongy feel. You can get a neat device that you can bleed them without mess for about $6 at the auto parts place. BTW I was about to do the rear drum brakes on my 97 Camry and compared the new shoes to the old ones. 1/2 of the lining of the old shoes were there and wearing nicely...at 180,000 miles! I bought the car new so I know the have never been changed. I did have them cleaned off a couple times of brake dust, that is all. Rob

Rear drum brakes adjust when the parking brake is applied.

Rear brakes adjust when backing up, i thought. I never use the parking break, and lock evenly.
