Light doesn't come on when door is open

This started today: when I open the door of my 98 Camry, neither the interior light not the "door open" sign on the dashboard comes on.

The interior light bulb is ok as it does come on when the switch is flipped manually.

What could it be: fuse? (Sorry, I am not exactly Ms Goodwrench here!)

There is a push button switch which is activated (retracted) in the door jam when the door is open (just like a refrigerator). The switch is broken or does not retract properly when the door is open. Find the switch and see if it is stuck (try some WD-40 to unstick it). If you have a problem finding the switch, check the door on the other side.

Thanks. Makes sense even to a non-tech like me. I'll check that.

My '96 has done that from time to time. The plunger switches are under a rubber weather protector. I just operate them while holding the plunger out and twisting slightly to re-establish contact. Do this while noting when the courtesy light starts to operate again.

The switches are mounted on the body under where the door closes.

Got it. I still haven't gotten to my car but this makes sense. Was your problem due to the weather protector getting stiff or the switch itself. Also, could you fix the problem permanently?
