Above the rear axle.
== Charcoal cannister is in the engine compartment - the collected fuel vapor is routed to the engine intake manifold through the throttle body. Should be on the frame rail under the air filter then back toward the fire wall. It is a cylindrical shape with vacuum hoses on top and a short vent hose at the bottom.
Cylindrical only on the manual trans model for 1997. It's a large rectangular assembly on the automatic, which is what the OP has by odds.
