Lubricating radio antenna -doesn't extend all the way

1996 Camry. Radio antenna does not extend fully when I turn on the radio.

Any easy way to lubricate this and free it up.

Have put WD-40 on it. Other lubricants. No luck so far.

Thanks for any info.

Cheers

My '95 has the same problem. I asked the dealer if the telescoping part could be replaced independent of the motor unit. The answer was, "yes, but bring it in for a look". $150 will buy a replacement for the whole unit at the parts counter, and it doesn't look too hard to install. Installation at the dealer was estimated at another $150. I believe the a used unit can be purchased at a local junk yard for about $50.

This is common after 3+ years (ha when warrenty runs out). New mast with toothed nylon drive belt is $28-32. Think you'll find entire new antenna is over $230. Its maybe an hour job (worse case) to replace the mast if ya have to disassemble motor to get broken nylon belt out --- 20 minutes if it isn't fully broken.

As another respondent noted, you may have to replace the toothed belt part. But, on my 94 Nissan I have to clean and regrease the antenna mast about every two to three years to keep it fully extending and retracting. I've used WD-40 to clean the mast, but don't recommend it - and if it gets on the clear coat, it may leave a trail in the finish. After cleaning mine, I put on a coat of a light silicon based grease (which I can no longer find). After greasing, I then cycle the antenna a number of times and wipe off the excess. But, this only works if the mast tape has not stripped out a couple of teeth. My newer Camry has not external antenna and I am glad not to have this problem - of course there does appear to be a performance difference.

About once a month I use a low tech method of lubing the antenna mast. I take some waxed apper and run it up and down a few times. You would be surprised to see how much dirt comes off.
