OBD Check Engine Light P0420

2000 Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder - CE About 71000 Miles

I saw check engine light on the dash copule of days ago. Took to nearest autoparts store to check the error code. Error code was P0420 something related to catalytic converter.

To my surprise Autoparts store person reset the code and told me if it comes again take it to the nearest muffler shop..

I drove about 30 plus miles after the reset but OBD malfunction light had not yet came.

Does anyone knows about this error code? Only think I know catalytic converter are very expensive my guesst $ 800-1000+ expense.

If your engine is kept in tune (NGK Iridium spark plugs, valve clearances, timing belt, etc) and is not leaking vacuum or in the exhaust pipe upstream of the sensors, then I'd think it's most likely your oxygen sensors. I'd think you need to change out both of them.

If your car is NON-California spec (many other state use Calif spec), then should be about $84+shipping for the upstream one (#13354 planar type)

Downstream sensor is a little more expensive, about $105 for an old thimble type sensor.

However, if you are electrically inclined to be able match wire colors and can splice on the old connector then get the excellent Bosch

*Planar* type sensor #15733 for about $61. These work for both up and downstream for NON-CALIF spec. These are more resistant to contamination than old thimbles.

I know some people like Densos instead. But personally I think they're junk and is probably what you have now.

The light has not yet came again after driving about 100 miles or more. Should I bother?
