performance pistons?

Do "performance pistons" (slightly taller pistons which would give a higher compression ratio) exist for the 5S-FE engine?

Having trouble finding any online for the Camry...

Taller pistons are used to raise compression in race/drag motors, but in streeters they do have their disadvantages. The 5SFE is already close to

10:1CR, if you increase that withraised top pistons, the engine may become non-interference if the flycutting of valve reliefs of the piston crown is not sufficient to allow the valves to not come into contact if the belt breaks. Detonation is minimised by "flat-top" design, plus the knock-sensor may spend a lot of time pulling advance off due pinging unless you run high octane or LPG/Propane.

Turbo-charging raises effective CR due the extra charge volume with no machining, even tho many turbo engines use head-spacers to lower the CR to avoid detonation. But you still can extract higher performance more safely with a good turbo install and controller.

For some reason the 5SFE is not a popular candidate for performance improvements. One reason is the std cam-profiles are designed for lower rev torque and good economy. But claims of weaker internals is overstated IMO. The 3SGTE may have stronger block and crank etc, but moderate boost in an

5SFE (eg 8 psi) will still give netter performance without blowing the motor.. A firm called "Burien" Toyota have done a lot of work on turboing the 5SFE.

Yeah, I guess 5SFE and performance don't seem to go hand-in-hand. But a little googling shows a MR2 5SFE turbo kit:

Also, bere is an old post from 2000 that people were talking about a possible TRD turbo kit. Don't know if Toyota ever succeed in developing one for the 5SFE. Maybe Burien has their own aftermarket source for the kits.

10-16-2000, 02:33 PM Im not too sure if we are talking about the same company or not but i have been put on a waiting list for the TRDNW Burien Toyota 5sfe turbo. but thats not due to come out until the end of december or begining of January.

I was also told that TRD USA is trying to develop a turbo system but keeps have too many problems. so they might just not go with it as a whole. (they dont like the 4 cylinder too much)
