I wonder if the factory programs the Check Engine (tab) on 1991 Camrys ?
Back in summer of 1996, I was about to start trip back home from Michigan to NY, when the CHECK ENGINE sign became visible on my dashboard. I went to a TOYOTA dealership in Holland, MI and had things checked out. Was told: "No computer fault codes were stored. Perhaps Oxygen sensor is flaky, expect less than optimum gas mileage on trip back to NY. No Charge. Have a nice trip home." (Great service in for a New Yorker in Michigan !)
This happened at about 33k miles. (Overdue for 30k maintenance service.)
The CHECK ENGINE tab disappeared from view somewhere near Youngstown, Ohio !
The following May/June, when getting NYS Inspection done, nothing was found wrong with emissions and I was very happy camper.
My question is: Is the CHECK ENGINE tab programmed to drop down into view a few kilo miles past 30K/60K if the 30K/60K maintenance is not yet accomplished ? Car presently has just over 58,800 miles driven with this engine.
