and tranny ran like new, all fluid were clean, ice cold AC. The problems
I found on the car were the brakes shook badly when depressing them,
warped rotors I assume, and the CEL light was on. The owner said the
light has been on for at least 3 years and he never had the codes
pulled. I was wanting a run around town car and one to drive
occassionally out of town. Would this car last me say another 30k or so
when I will be able to buy a new one. The car has 180k miles and the
water pump and timing belt had just been changed. He wanted 2500 but
came down to 2000. Would this be a ok car or on its last leg?
Re: question on 99 camry with 180k miles
It is really impossible to tell based on what you have told us. But the
fact that the current owner replaced the timing belt and water pump but
never bothered to check the check engine light codes for 3 years does
not bode well.
Any car 12 years old with 180K miles on it, even if checked out stem to
stern, could die tomorrow, based on the fact that any repair over say
$1000 is the kiss of death. But a the price IS good, and a Camry is much
better than average to be okay.

the codes before I give him an answer. I have driven cars with less than
half the miles that did not run as good as this one. And I know with
that many miles its a gamble, might last 100 miles or go another 50k
miles with no major problems.
Re: question on 99 camry with 180k miles
Is it like a loud moaning sound when you press the brakes from freeway
speeds? If so it's probably the rear drums. Changed those on our '99
on a hunch (just bought cheap drums in case I was wrong) and no more
brake moaning sound.
They sell a fairly cheap ODB-II code reader at Costco... maybe that
can tell you the problem(s) fairly quickly?
