question - steering wheel shudders

When I apply the brakes, the steering wheel shudders very noticably between 40 and 30 mph. It doesn't happen 100% of the time, but it happens pretty often.

Any ideas what this might be?

Why only in that speed range? The speed is very consistent - when I am braking, I know when I have hit 40!

TIA, Nate

Things to check:

  1. Brake rotors for warpage. (If you don't know or can't check rotors the tire shop should be able to check them as well.)
  2. Tire balance.
  3. While at tire shop ask them to check steering and suspension linkages. My guess is both 1 and 2 need attention and you may possibly have a problem with something in 3. HTH, davidj92

One thing I forgot that is a possibility is a tread seperation in a tire. Tire shop can check this as well. HTH, davidj92

Hmmmm....Interesting.

i have this same problem in a '94 LHS, the tires are less than 8 months old and have less than 10,000 miles on them.

i was thinking rotors; I did the rotos about a year ago, but the shimmying is only coming through the wheel; there is no pulsation on the brake pedal.

Then in your case I wouldn't suspect the rotors. Although not a high number, tires can be bad when new or very shortly after. You should be able to go back to where you bought tires and get a free check of tires, steering and suspension components. Be careful if they start mentioning large $$$. You can usually find a tread seperation by jacking vehicle and spinning tire slowly. Watch for an unusual contour or bulge. Sometimes you can feel arougn tire tread and feel the uneven place. Do a visual first before feeling looking for wires, if the steel belt is broken it can protrude wires through tread and will stick you. I usually feel around tread with a leather glove on first to eliminate wires protruding. You can also look for loose steering or suspension parts while vehicle is jacked. HTH, davidj92

quick update... I had new tires installed over the weekend, and the problem still seems to occur, so I think it is unlikely a balance or tread separation issue for me. While I was there, I asked the guy to check the rotors and linkage, but the response was along the lines of "we do tires and wheels here, we don't have mechanics"

I feel a tiny bit of rumbling in the brake pedal, but it is definitely much more noticable in the steering wheel.

Thanks, n8
