Go to a car stereo installer or radio shack store and ask for a filter for ignition noise. Meanwhile the problem is in the engine compartment. Maybe time for new ignition wires. Check routing of your harnesses etc. Pops

Hey, me too! I replaced the stock radio with a Sony, and it worked fine for a while. Now, when I hit a bump, it causes static, hit another it goes away.
I also had to replace the antenna. I hate replacement antennas. So, what I'm betting on mine (and maybe yours) is that the antenna is not properly grounded. If the antenna loses grounding, the FM will suffer slightly, but the AM will suck. If the antenna is mounted to the pillar outside the driver's window, then the grounding is accomplished at the mount the antenna 'sprouts' from. Try tightening the screws, if this doesn't work, get a 'star' washer and place it between the bottom of the mount and the body. This will aid in grounding.
The best thing is to stop listeneing to Rush Limbaugh... ;)
Need more clues.
Do you get static with the engine on but the car not moving?
Does the static sound like a rotating sound that gets faster as you drive faster?
Do you live in a dry climate?
Does it happen in the rain?
Does it stop if you touch the brakes?
I once drove in the desert in Arizona and there was static build up on the tires. But there are many other kinds of AM radio static such as...
Ignition noise from the engine
any loose connection in the car
Buzz picked up from overhead power lines check the ground connections on the antenna cable where it plugs into the raio and where the antenna is bolted to the car.

Many things to check.
Start with the battery connections. Any looseness or corrosion will cause the symptoms you described.
There are many more likelihoods too.

Simplest answer: Could be your radio is just not adept at pulling in distant stations. See if you have the same problem listening to local stations in a major city.
