Re: '92 V6 losing coolant from reservoir overflow hose

You have a bad head gasket or two... That is allowing air to enter the coolant. When you overheated it it damaged the gaskets and probably the heads at least needs to be resurfaced flat if they warped. I think your radiator was fine when your mechanic had it cleaned...

So if the radiator was fine and the head gasket didn't get damaged until it overheated, how exactly did it overheat in the first place?

Also, is there a way to test and make sure I have a damaged head gasket without disassembling the engine? I have checked the oil and did not notice any milkiness that would indicate water in the oil.

I think you said it was a used car, maybe previous owner ran it low on coolant? What condition was the thermostat in? Were any of the radiator hoses collapsing? Are both fans turning? Proper mixture of Toyota red coolant? Head gaskets do fail on there own over time also. It could have failed allowing compression gases into the coolant passages causing bubbles and overheating.

Yes. Just to clarify a bit further, the "air" is probably pressurized gasses leaking from the combustions chamber(s) into the water jacket. Unfortunately, another expensive repair. Certainly more work than replacing the radiator and water pump.
