Re: Don't shoot your mouth off or else!

Have 97 camry 4cyl with 92k miles. I have had many conversations to the effect that camrys last.a long time, rides smooth and is low maintenance. That may be the case for other toyotas but mine is starting to disintegrate. Everything was fine up until about 8 mos ago when i discovered that the oil switch on the firewall was leaking! If i hadn't noticed that the oil level was low i probably would have lost the car. It emits white smoke when started (overnite) so the valve seals are faulty. The front struts had to be replaced. Recently the dealer had to replace the manifold pipe(s) which btw contain the catalytic converter! That alone cost $1200. Toss in another $300 for the wiper motor that will not shut off.

I think i have learned a lesson. No more tooting about toyota. Detroit makes junk but it has a lot of competition! The fact that you have had to replace a few wear and tear items on a Toyota doesent make it a lousy car in fact Toyota"s in general are highly ranked as very reliable cars. unlike domestic detroit vehicles that in my opinion are only good to keep mechanics

busy at pulling there haire fixin" and figuring out whats next wrong with it.

yeah but in general toyotas are great vehicles. I'd by a 91 toyota camry over a 2006 colbat any day for the same price even!

Depends... my 91 runs well but @$2500aus resale, if it blows another head gasket (or something else) for $2500 I'm better off spending that on another old volvo - they last better. I reckon $1000aus/year is what a car costs if it's a good model (cost+repairs-resale). At that a new $25000 car would have to last 25 years with no repairs - though I never owned a new car the best buy now might be the cheapest new junk box for ~$12000. Hyundai, Mitsubishi etc.
