Rear ended on Highway. Invisable (to me) damage????

Slowing down for traffic when the guy behind me rear ended me. I was doing about 30 mph??? (not sure) Dont know how fast he was going. His car had serious front end damege and was towed. My 97 Camry XLE v6 is drivable. The bumper is cracked. It looks like he went under the bumper and smashed the tailpipe and muffler. Slight dent in the gas tank. The drivers power seat back now makes a grinding noise when moved and the whole seat seems loose now. when I stop the seat rocks forward and rocks backward when I accelerate.

The car just went into the shop for repairs.

Would that kind of collision do more serious damage than just replacing the bumper?

I hear about bumper crash tests that do all kinds of damage. This was a pretty good whack. I plan on stopping by the collision shop tomorrow and talking to them but I was hoping some of your expertise could point me towards what kind of problems I might expect.

TIA

I just talked to the shop and he said they had to replace the whole exhast from the engine back.

I didnt think to ask what kind of parts were used.

My bet is they use the cheapest parts they can get??? I'll probably be replacing it in 2 years???

In many states you have the right to specify that only factory (OEM) parts be used.

If you dont have insurance and you want a cheap repair, you should be able to ask the repairer to use where possible, wrecking yard body panels and suspension parts if needed.. Naturally, a mechanic should OK the suspension parts first. I had a smash many yeras ago where the car had a totalled frontend. I supplied the repairer with a front-cut (panels only) which he fitted and repainted. Saved a lot when you have no insurance.

If you don't have insurance, you shouldn't be driving anyway

You said the tank had a dent, it could have a coating inside that is now cracked.

I was referring to comprehensive insurance,..not third party where the other party's damage is fixed by your insurance company if you are in the wrong. This insurance should be mandatory.
