1999 4Runner Timing Belt question

I read somewhere that the timing belt needs to be changed every 60,000 miles. I just bought a used 99 4Runner but I don't know how long ago the belt was replaced (it has 100,000 miles now) ? Does it cause engine damage if it breaks ? Should I just replace it now to be on the safe side?

Don't know about damage, but I'd change it now so I would have a known starting point. Same with oil and filter, and ALL fluids...

Depending on the type of engine you have it could result in massive damage. Imagine the pistons slapping against the valves. Other engines will simply loose power and will have to be towed where the belt is replaced.

Try $1500 for a 22-RE engine (timing chain, gears, guides and seals).
