2003 4Runner Recall

I recently purchased the 2003 4Runner Sport Edition 4x4 V8 and was completely in love with my truck until I was on my way to Yosemite with trailer in tote and ALL of a sudden, my Dash board Check Engine light comes on along with the VXC Trac Contol OFF light... At the same time, my truck started slowing down. I had no acceleration but managed to get my truck and trailer off the freeway in time.

Turns out, Toyota has recalled their Throttle body assmebly.... I took it to the dealer one month before the break down, but at the time, was told mine was fine. I didn't think anything of it until I was stranded a couple hundred miles away from home and Yosemite!!!! Bottomline, take my advice- Take it to your nearest Dealer- its covered under the warranty, get your throttle body assembly replaced, even if they say yours is fine. DON'T GET STRANDED.

Other than that, I love my new 4Runner. Get it replaced, EVEN if they tell you its fine.

Easier said then done. If it is not covered by the recall they won't do it till it breaks and leaves you stranded. Of course if the dealer was wrong, they owe you something for leaving you stranded.

fine.

Is this recall just on the V8's --- AllData doesn't have it listed for either engine?????

Yeah, its all news to me. Never heard of this, nor is their a recall that I've heard of. I dont even recall seeing a TSB. Oh well, this will give Philip more ammo agaisnt gizmos ;-) as this is a "fly by wire" throttle and if it fails, you'll barely have throttle, only if you mash it to the floor.

He has no idea what he is talking about, no recall or TSB even.

When I was looking at 03 LC's, one dealer told me that all V8's were being recalled for a sticking throttle body. One poster on this group or on Edmonds (can't remember which) said he had a letter from Toyota for such a recall. Is this just all rumors? Something is a bit strange here.

I did buy an 03 LC, which now has about 2500 miles on it. When I bought it (Aug 03) I had the dealer check for recalls based on the VIN and he said there were none. I've received no notices so far. I've not been able to find any TB recall items on the net. Maybe there is a VIN range where there is a problem or potential problem. Is this perhaps a hidden TSB - only applicable on complaint or failure?

That's odd..

TC03015 Date of Bulletin: Jul 24, 2003 Summary: The throttle body motor may malfunction causing the malfunction indicator light (MIL) to illuminate on the dash, and the engine control module (ECM) will store a trouble code and place the vehicle into a limp home mode. Toyota will initiate special service campaign 30I to inspect and/or replace the throttle body.

BTW "special service campaign" is the same as a recall... if you didnt know... its just Toyota's Friendlier name for it.

From NHTSA's site...

I spent the entire day typing out all the TSB's for 4runners 1984-2003 for my

formatting link
site... but after all that time... I think ill justtake the list down and link it to NHTSA's site instead =)
