2005 Tacoma Manual Transmission

Hello All,

New to the group and the Taco family.

I bought a 2005 Tacoma back in April of this year. The Taco has 9000 miles on it and appears to be running great. The truck has the 6cyc 6 speed tranny extended cab with the 6' bed and off road package.

I guess over the last 2 - 3 weeks on my way home from work on the hi-way the tranny was slipping out of gear. I noticed it more in 4th and 5th gear and at times in 6th gear. The stick just comes out of gear and goes into neutral. I have been monitoring this activity but there appears to be no rhyme or reason as too why this happens. It's purely random. What I have done during shifting is that I make sure that I am in gear before I come off the clutch and the problem still persists.

Has anyone out there heard or have had this happen to them? I'm trying to re-produce this issue so that when I take the truck to the dealer they fix it, but I have not been succesful.

Question: Are there adjustments that can be made to prevent this? OR do I have to wait until this problem just breaks for good?

TIA, Paul

I?m having the same exact problem with my truck. It?s very random and will slip out of 4th gear. Never had a problem with 5th and 6th though.

Have you taken the truck in for service? If so, have they found the issue? I plan on taking the truck in after Thanksgiving.

this is for an older model truck than you have:

but i had the same issues in a '90 4runner with the 5-speed manual. after replacing the shifter bushings everything was fine and no more jumping out of gear. takes about 1 hour plus $20 in parts.

is seems odd that your truck would be doing this after only 9K miles, but sometimes things like holding on the gear shift all the time (i'm guilty of that) will cause things to wear much quicker.

Thanks Mike,

Going to take the truck in for repair. I just don't want to run into an issue with reproducing the problem. If it doesn't reproduce I don't want them to send me on my way.

How about bluffing? "Look - I've found at least two dozen people online who've had the same problem. There *has* to be a service bulletin on the issue. Get me the service manager, please, or someone who's informed on the problem."

Sometimes the "online" part can hurt more than help.

I'm with you on the "I've heard of some other owners having the problem".

Of course, you could always be a smartass:

"What if this truck was out of warranty, but I still couldn't reproduce the problem for you? Would you know how to deal with it?"

or:

"What if you test drove the truck and you saw the problem occur? What would that tell you?" It might tell them nothing except that they could now believe the owner, instead of assuming that he's not moving the shifter all the way into place or whatever it is they're thinking. For that matter, there may be only a very short list of things to check under the truck, and reproducing the problem is totally irrelevant.

There is a problem here with the truck and I assume that there are more out there with the problem. For all I know, there may be a service bulletin on this issues, as mentioned earlier. I'll know more this afternoon when I stop to make the appointment. The dealership that I bought the truck from is very good. I have narrowed the problem down to 4th gear although I have had the problem happne in 5th and 6th. More so in 4th. The problem appears around 50 miles/hour in 4th, but it's really random. The main reason for bringing the truck in is to document the problem. Although I only ~9500 miles on the truck and the warranty is 3yrs 36K documenting is the way to go.

I'm under the impression this its widely experienced. Its a knocking noise from ( in my case, the Passenger side bed mount) when small bumps occur. It starts when the temp is

It's currently colder that that where I am, and the two Tacos I'm familiar with don't exhibit the problem.

Are you aware that a TSB exists for rear cab (not bed) mounts?

Pay $10 @ techinfo.toyota.com, or ask your dealer to look it up.
