2005 tacoma oil level

I have a 2005 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab 4 cyl. 2.7 L engine. The owners manual says to put in 6.1 qts. of oil when changing with new filter. The level seems to be about 1/2 qt. too high on the dipstick. Stick to the owners manual recomendation of 6.1 qts. or put in 5.5 qts. and have correct level on dipstick ?

Always believe your eyes. Start with 5.5, drive for a couple of minutes, let the oil settle, then check again.

0.4 of a quart is not going to matter much. My old 3VZE burns a little oil and leaks some too so I overfill it all the time so I don't have to add oil so often. Never had an issue.

Yeah, but you know what I mean anyway. No sane mechanic throws a certain amount of oil in, based ONLY on what the engine's supposed to take. You do it be checking the level. As far as overfilling, I thought that was supposed to be a no-no, at least with some engines. Something about the oil foaming?

Ya, always go with the dipstick. Unless the dipstick is the wrong one.

As for overfilling, I did it once. 9 quarts in a truck that should take

  1. A friend was "helping" and didn't tell me he added 4 quarts and I put the normal 5 quarts in. I then drove it 70 miles. The engine did not like going over 3k RPM with all that oil. But it lived.

I have also ran it with only 2 quarts of oil(I did not know it at the time). It's amazing what a Toyota can take and still keep going.

Not just the oil foaming. But it is also possible to cause a oil leak at the crank seal.

I have a 2004 Toyota Tachoma with a 2RZ-FE 4cyl engine. The manual says it takes 5.8 quarts with filter. I put in 5.5 quarts and changed the filter and my dipstick read about 1/2 quart high.
