'85 4x4 Pickup Metallic Grinding From Front Driverside Wheel!?

I drive an '85 4x4 Pickup with a 22r engine 5 spd trans and 99,000 miles. Just recently I noticed that somtimes when starting the truck from a stop there is a harsh metallic grating noise that comes from the front driverside wheel. It happens in forward and reverse and the wheel does not nesecarially have to be turned. I have manual locking hubs on the front axle and they are both in the free position. I checked the steering components but couldnt find any thing so im thinking wheel bearing because the front axle is not actually engaged? does any one have any ideas? worried my wheel might fall off while im driving!

Thanks, Anders

Best bet would be to pick up an axle rebuild kit, some grease and shop towels and tear into it:

Probably $200 on up for labor, not sure what your local labor rates are. Check a local shop and see what they quote.
