86 PU OverDrive problem

I'm trying to diagnose a problem with my 86 Toyota PU 22R Automatic, Home Depot beater. I don't drive this much on the hi-way, but once in while I need to get on the freeway. The engine strains at 65mph. I figured out the OD button the shifter does not work, nor does the OD light on the in the center console above the radio. Instead of buying a new shifter handle assembly, I decided to put a SPST switch on the dash and wire it to the connector under the steering column. But the OD still does not work, or at least I don't feel or hear the engine shift like on my other Toyota vehicles.

Is there any way, other that what I tried, to find out if the OD works? Where else should I be looking to resolve my problem?

Thanks in Advance

On my '88 there was a temp sensor on the front of the head, a relay in the driver foot well, and a solenoid at the tranny. My problem was a broken wire at the solenoid. Get a book and study the electrics of the system. The fact that the o/d light doesn't come on may be a good clue in your diagnosis.
