93 4x4 Truck 22RE O2 sensor question

Vehicle:

1993 Toyota Truck, 4x4, 22RE engine, 156K miles.

I have the Haynes manual, but not the FSM.

I have a Check Engine Light on. I determined from the Haynes book that the code is a 21 indicating a problem with the O2 sensor. The light came on and stayed on, it did not blink prior. The sensor is still the factory sensor.

The wiring all looks fine, no visable problems.

I called AutoZone about the sensor. They asked if it was the one before or aftter the cat. I told them it was before the cat, since this is the only O2 sensor I can find in the system. AZ says there should be two sensors.

Is this the only O2 sensor?

The shop manual I have shows a second O2 sensor for CA models which I can verify as my 93 4wd pickup, 22re was built in Fremont.

You say you don't know why, but what experience do you have with aftermarket sensors? I need to buy a couple and would love to save some money by not buying oem and I was counting on buying aftermarket.

CA emissions trucks will have two O2 sensors, one before and one after the cat. All others will have just the one, before the cat.

I bought the Bosch OEM-type from AutoZone to replace the one in my '93 T100 4X4 and it works fine. Just make sure you get the 'OEM-type' and not the 'generic', as the OEM-type has the exact plug for the wiring harness. It's twice as much as the 'generic' sensor but at least you don't have to do any wire splicing (which is usually the source of problems people have with generics) and it is still cheaper than a true Toyota OEM sensor.

I replaced the O2 sensor last night with the Toyota OEM unit. The CEL is off now.

It cost me $131.50 at the stealership. AutoZone quoted me $121 for the OEM-Type, with the plug. Price it at the dealer and aftermarket, before you decide.
