95 4Runner 4x4 swaying and pulling side to side

95 4Runner 4x4. This spring it started getting pretty unstable when driving on the highway with a crosswind. Now it pulls to the left or right when driving on city streets that are rutted. It's getting pretty hard to control.

I don't have any experience with steering or suspension components so I turn to this newsgroup for help. Any ideas what could be the problem? Shocks? Tierod ends? Ball joints?

I am equipped to fix the problem myself but in this case I'm not sure where to start. On first inspection everything looks okay. No obvious problems.

I'd appreciate some advice.

Thank you, DS

But the truck is fine on level smooth roads. On uneven surface roads is when it pulls left or right. I doubt it's just the bushings in this case.

BTW, the front tires are worn more on the inside edges. There is no shake in the steering wheel.

It could then be bad shock absorbers. But I dont think it will ever go very straight on an uneven surface road.

I would check both the shocks and the suspension bushings - the car will go straight on a flat road. But when you get off-camber on a highly crowned road or a side-hill condition and all the suspension shifts to one side in the bushings that's when the pulling and "nervous directional control" starts.

Never? Jeff Gross, meet Baja 500 & 1000 winner Mr. Ivan "Ironman" Stewart. Ivan, Jeff. ;-P

Stiff isn't necessarily bad. I put LT235/75R15 Bridgestones on my Cruiser and they ride like iron - but they wear like iron, too.

70,000 miles so far and they have tread for 100,000+ if the ozone doesn't get to them first. I can live with a little stiff. :-)
