Bed Cover

I'm looking at a bed cover for a 2001 Tundra, regular cab, long bed at

It's a carbon fiber or some kind of polymer that's stronger, lighter and cheaper than fiberglass. This company doesn't make one for the long bed. Does anyone know of a manufacturer or dealer that makes this type for the long bed? TIA, Dave

The Undercover's a nice product - I have one on my Tacoma. Did you contact them to find out how long it'll be until they offer one for your model? When I first began looking at them, they didn't have one for the Tacoma double cab, either, but their estimate for a finished model was right on time.

Also, take a look at this:

I've seen one of these installed and it's pretty nice. Not sure if they make one for your truck yet. The only reason I didn't buy it is that it requires a box for the top to roll up into. In my short bed truck, that would've taken up too much space.

One thing to check before you do any of these things: Try loading various things into your bed - the things you intend to haul regularly, and see how close they come to the top of the rails. Then, find out how much the various covers protrude downward into the bed. Even an inch might make a difference, and truck beds look deeper than they really are. After installing my Undercover (also known as Versacover), I found that none of my ice chests would fit in the bed with the cover down. The cross bracing on the cover takes up about 1/2" of bed height. Not the fault of the manufacturer - the thing has to be braced somehow. It's just the way it is.

Doug, Thanks for the tips, I noticed the ribs on the underside but didn't think about them protruding down into the bed area. I called the manufacture of the Undercover and they said 1 to 1-1/2 years before they make one for the long bed. The A.R.E. is my second choice because of the way it transfers the load without stressing the bed corners. I have a soft cover on now that's been on since truck was new but it's shrinking and getting hard to snap on. I don't think I want another soft cover of any kind as it will shrink. I may wait a year for the Undercover as I really like them. Will check the clearance thing in the meantime and if an issue will go with the ARE. Dave

Dave,

Have you ever considered a soft cover?

I put a truxedo

my taco lastspring and have been extremely pleased with it. It keeps the bed coveredand rolls up next to the cab, out of the way, when I need the whole bedexposed. It has survived both snow and a hot summer and still looks good.

You may also want to think about security. There isn't any with a soft cover. A knife will go through it like butter. If you're prepared to have everything in the bed stolen, a soft cover is just the thing.

Zero security.

IMHO, any tonneau cover (hard or soft) and security are mutually exclusive. If you want better security, get something like a bed box/ truck trunk that is bolted to the bed with tamper proof locks. I wouldn't want to leave anything that I wasn't willing to part with under any tonneau cover...

The main reason that I have one is to minimize wind drag and to keep rain, snow, and dirt out of my truck bed.

Nothing's perfect, but I've tried to break into mine. More work than your average hit & run thief is willing to do, in terms of time and exposure.

Bern, I really like the looks of a soft tonneau cover as I'm from the old school, but I bought one they stated wouldn't shrink like the ones I've had in the past and it shrank as well. For that reason I don't think I'm going to go with another soft cover as the Undercover isn't that much more than a soft and the A.R.E. is about twice as much but will increase resale value so I don't see where I can go wrong. Thanks, Dave
