Broken Leaf Spring

This is the fourth set on a 98 Tacoma 4x4. First three were all Toyota stock and this set is from NWOR. Stock set-up; no lift. Either the main spring cracks or this time the smaller helper spring has a crack in it. At first I thought the Toyota springs were just poorly designed but the NWOR set only lasted a year.

Why? And how do I stop it?

Put some good shocks on it. Poor shocks WILL break springs!!!

Are the bilsteins the right ones for the truck and are they functioning?

Well, unless things have changed A LOT, the only thing other than abuse that will breal those springs is bad shocks. I was a Toyota service manager for 10 years and only saw one broken spring that did not have a bad shock - and that truck was ALWAYS run hard and heavy.

Are you giving your truck flying lessons?

You guys need to decide if you are going to top postj or bottom post, but not do both.

I don't care which you choose, but settle on one or the other.

Are you using new or used Toyta springs ? I can't imagine you going through that many new springs ! Toyota had a problem with the leaf springs from teh start of the Tacomas so I would stay away from Toyota springs.

I have no experience with NWOR but from what I hear they sell alot of junk. I only see their name mentioned when someone has a complaint about their products, which seems to happen alot. If you haven't had the springs that long give them a call and see if they will warranty them, springs should last longer than a year or two.

I used a set of springs fron Wheeler's Off Road. The springs are listed as" Wheeler's HD Tacoma replacement leaf springs". The set I purchased were made by Deaver Racing, which I have heard nothing but good about. I have had the springs on there for a little over a year and have had no problems with them. I also replaced my shocks at the same time with another set of bilsteins. The ride is better than factory and the handleing slightly improved. I would purchase them again if I needed another set but hope they will last the life of the truck.

You acn check them out here.

All but the last set were stock Toyota springs, all of which lasted longer than the NWOR springs. I am taking it to a spring shop tomorrow to see what they can do for me. I looked around for springs like Old Man Emu and the like but they don't make them for a (non lifted) Toyota. The spring shop guy said there is something else going on. He said if I buy another set of springs most likely the same thing would happen again unless the problem is determined. Maybe I just go offroad too much?

then they must have changed because the owner of Glendale Spring says Toyotas are known for cracked springs.
