"CLUNKS" when shifting

Hello,

I hav an '03 Tacoma mini 4 cyl automatic 2wd with 41,000 miles on it. My truck makes a terrible "CLUNKING" noise when it shifts into second gear. This noise only happens when I am accelerating from a dead stop. I have had no other problems at all. I have been told it is "axle wrap" causing this. I have been told the drive shaft coupling needs to be lubricated. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks

Isn't your truck still under the 5-yr/60,000 mile drivetrain warranty? Let the dealership fix the problem. Tell them upfront that if it isn't a warranty item whether or not you want them to fix it. If the problem is transmission trouble, you certainly want the warranty to fix it.

At least on a Tundra, only the 4wd has the external driveshaft spline coupling that needs grease. Do you have a sliding section of your driveshaft with a grease fitting?

Your 'axle wrap' is a slip-joint on the drive-shaft towards the differential that needs to be lubricated. It will take a good 25 pumps of the grease gun the first time you do it too. On my Taco, its most noticeable when coming to a stop, and is considered 'normal'. I tend to not agree with this statement from the dealer, but it is a truck after all. Good luck.

All drive-shafts have a slip-joint, it's a splined coupling into the transmission, with an oil seal in the tranny. A splined slip is absolutely necessary on "every" vehicle as the vehicle loading and spring action over bumps causes the rear axel -to -transmission distance to vary, and if there is no slip anywhere, you get severe breakage as the parts try to move. Even CV axles have slip joints.

So since every driveshaft has a some sort of "slip joint", does that mean that every slip joint has a grease fitting?

Thanks for all the replys. I appreciate it!

I was under my truck today. There is NO grease fitting anywhere on the drive shaft. I have an appointment at the dealership this Fri. I'll let you know the outcome. Thanks!
