Looking to convert all the rubber parts in my 2003 4Runner to the e85 compatible fuel parts (like stainless steel tubes, etc). E85 fuel by my house is $1.79 a gallon vs the 2.25 a gallon for the other stuff. With Goldman talking about $100 a barrel fuel prices, we might see 4-5 dollars a gallon fuel real soon. I want to jump on this and see if anyone knows if you can get this conversion done in the Chicago land area?
I doubt you will find anyone making a conversion kit for E85 fuel. Alcohol is highly corrosive so you would have to replace most, if not all, of your present fuel system. You would most likely need a new fuel tank, fuel pump, injectors and all the fuel lines, that would be expensive enough. But you will also need a new ECU that is reprogrammed to provide the correct fuel delivery with E85 fuel. Alcohol fuels require twice the volume of fuel as compared to gasoline. If someone were to make a conversion kit for E85 fuel it would also have to be tested by the EPA to ensure that the vehicle would still meet the emission requirements for that year vehicle. The testing is expensive and the manufacturer of the kit would have to pay for it all.
If you really want to run E85 you would be better off just to buy a flex fuel vehicle.
I've been using E-85 to make a 50/50 blend in my 92 Toyota 4x4 with 22RE for several years now. Ethanol has an anti-oxidant added at the plant to stop corrosion. There is a big difference between ethanol and methanol.The mileage on my E-85 Ford Taurus dropped from 25 to 21 mpg.Also running the
