My friends 81 toy pu won't pass smog because of too much co2 and hydrocarbons. I've done a complete tune-up and adjusted the carb, but still won't pass. could someone please give me some ideas on this problem! This is a calf veh. Thanks....

TOO MUCH CO2? That would suggest a catalyst that was too effective. I doubt that. Much more likely too much CO (carbon monoxide). Excessive carbon monoxide is typically the result of an air/fuel mixture that is richer than necessary. HC (unburned gasoline) will start to rise as CO becomes excessively rich. But HC will also rise without a corresponding rise in CO by having the ignition timing too far advanced. HC will also rise, accompanied by a lessening of CO when there is misfiring going on.

Check float to make sure it stays afloat. :-) If it has a ceramic float, usaully black, they can start to become absorbant after a while and won't stay floating, which causes a high gas volume in float chamber. The spillover will go in engine as unmetered fuel and usually exit as excess CO and hydrocarbons. There used to be a lot different styles of special little pendulum scales to weigh these floats. Or you can set them in a container of gas and watch them to see if the sink any at all. If they have become porous it won't take too long until they have sank some. You want to see appx 2/3 or 3/4 of the float up out of the fuel. HTH, davidj92
