gauges on a 96 Tacoma??

I have seen on e-bay and other places where you can buy the gauge cluster for an SR-5 on a 95 and older model.... Can you do this for a 96 model? Is it that diffucult to change? I just have the speedo and idiot lights, i was really hoping to upgrade without spending an arm and a leg.

v6 5speed.. the two reasons i really wanted the tach too.

From what I've read while learning about this in my search for info on my 95.5 taco:

After 96 the speedo's are electronic and not mechanical. So it would appear that 96 is the LAST year you (and I) can use. (which makes no sense to me given the redesign a year previous.

2) Your's MUST be from a V6 or the tach won't read right. I need one from a 4 cyl.

If you send me your email I'll forword any links to V6 pods I find in exchange for your 4 cyl.:) snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com PS - The few I've found didn't have any idea what engine they were hooked up to. It's a crap shoot and many aren't returnable, or even guarenteed to work! I think I'll look till I find an OWNER parting out their truck.

--I'd try to look at an exploded diagram of the two instrument clusters. You might be able to swap your present speedometer into the cluster that has the gauges you want. Just be sure to have everything necessary for the elctronic one to work still in place.

Hi Steve,

I bought a '95 Tacoma 4 cylinder, 5 speed 2 wheel drive last summer. It had the simple instrument cluster with only a speedometer, an odometer and other warning lights. I asked my dealer if a junk yard instrument cluster would work. The dealer was not optimistic. They said there were 20 different wiring harnesses just for the insturment panel area. I took a chance anyway and bought a used cluster from another '96 5 speed 4 cylinder 2 wheel drive Tacoma. It cost about $75.00.

I was able to watch the "technician" at the junk yard remove the instrument cluster that I was going to buy. This helped me find all the "hidden" screws. It took about 90 minutes to remove my old cluster and install the junk yard one.

Everything works great, Now I have a Tachometer and a trip odometer. All the warning lights work. The wiring harnesses simply plugged into the back of the replacement instrument cluster. I didn't have to buy any new sending units, or change anything.

The only "problem" is the odometer is too high now. My truck had

74,631 miles on it. The new odometer read 135,292.

Good Luck
