got in wreck, now what?

Got rear ended sitting in traffic on my way home from work today. 98 Tacoma

2wd Xtra Cab. 78,xxx miles, feel like she was just getting broke it. Rear bumper went up under the truck, the bed buckled. Was hit by a 99 4runner with a metal brush guard on the front. Any idea on what the adjuster will say? First wreck I've ever been in and I would appreciate any advice. For what it is worth, I drove it home.

It will all depend on whether or not your frame is bent. If it is not bent you can get a new bed for the truck or pick one up at a junk yard for nothing.

What if the frame is bent?

If the frame is bent, it will be VERY expensive to fix - if at all possible. When you say adjuster, I can only assume you are refering to your insurance company. If so, and he/she determines that the frame is bent, it will probably be considered a total write-off.

At least, that has been my experience with friends who have gotten into a wreck which bent their frames.

Sounds like toast, but hard to tell without seeing it. If the frame is buckled, kiss it goodbye (wish you'd done this *before* I bought a '91 engine with 160,000 miles! ;)

You could buy the thing back from the insurance co. What they will do is pay you the amount it is valued at and then charge 10-15% when you buy it back. Caveat Emptor....once you buy it back *you* are responsible for any hidden damage the adjuster didn't find! Could mean a few thousand dollars out-of-pocket!

Take a good look at the frame rails... like I said, soiunds like toast, but if the damage to the frame is behind the rear suspension mounts you

*may* be able to strtaighten/weld without too much difficulty.

Good luck!

Does that mean they charge 10-15% OVER what they paid me for a total*, or that I could buy it for 10-15% of the value**?

  • - if they paid me 00 I could buy it back for 00-50? Hopefully, this is not the case.
** - if they paid me $7000 I could buy it back for $700-$1050, then use the rest to pay out of pocket for repairs?

I pulled the $7000 out of thin air. I have not even spoken with an adjuster yet. Thanks to everyone that has replied.

No, that would be about $700-1050! Then again, the value of Toyotas has gone way up, so you may be looking at 2500-3500!

The last time I had an accident the insurance company totalled the car. They gave me 2200 and I kept the car. It was a 77 Monarch in nearly new condition with the receipts and pics to prove it. That was about 3 years ago.
